Our collection of Teak Root furniture and sculptures are hand crafted and finished from the very base of the trees that have either been felled many years ago and have been collected by the indigenous people and farmers from Java from their own land or from the teak estates and plantations established there. As they are a by product of the Javanesse timber industry they are usually burned or left to rot.
Once collected, the roots are thoroughly cleaned, the debris removed and then allowed to air dry naturally. Each piece is a naturally unique creation and no two pieces are ever the same. Obviously nature plays a major part in crafting a root into being a table, a bench, a chair or a sculpture, but it is the keen eye and great skill of our craftsmen who hand finish the root into a stunning finished piece of workmanship. We use 1000 grit paper to sand the roots down and this fine finishing gives our furniture and a glass like finish, extremely smooth to the touch while enhancing the impervious quality of the wood, and ready to take linseed oil, wax or wood sealer. Each piece illustrates the beautiful lustre of the lightwood and the deep rich colours of the heartwood.
Due to its natural durability the root furniture can be used internally or externally, and blends well with any setting offering an unusual and natural look.
We offer dining tables, coffee tables, benches, bar tables, and stools. |
